TOKYO Night & Light: Monumental Projection Mapping

Experience Tokyo's history and future through dazzling light and sound on the Metropolitan Government Building, recognized by Guinness World Records.

About

As night deepens in Shinjuku, the east wall of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building’s Main Building No. 1 is adorned with a feast of light and sound. This projection mapping, named “TOKYO Night & Light,” adds new allure to Tokyo’s nightscape.

Spectators gather at Citizens’ Plaza, where, from sunset until around 9 p.m., they are captivated by a succession of projected images. On weekdays, highly visible content that highlights the architectural beauty of the government building is shown, while on weekends and holidays, colorful and story-driven works are screened.

From April 2025, a new piece titled “The Courier Who Runs Through Time” is being shown. The courier time-travels from Edo to the present and into the future, depicting Tokyo’s history and evolution. Famous sites such as Edo’s townscape, modern architecture, and Tokyo Tower are projected one after another, and the journey’s finale, arriving at the skyscrapers of Nishi-Shinjuku, evokes a sense of hope for the future. The visuals, which blend ukiyo-e style with contemporary dynamism, and the accompanying music, deeply move the audience. (metro.tokyo.lg.jp)

This projection mapping is environmentally conscious, using green energy. It has also been recognized by Guinness World Records™ as the “largest permanent architectural projection mapping display.” (metro.tokyo.lg.jp)

The art of light and sound floating in the Shinjuku night sky conveys a new charm of Tokyo to visitors. The images projected onto the government building’s wall connect past and future, evoking the city’s vibrancy and the depth of its history. This special experience, available only at this location, leaves a lasting impression on those who witness it.
