Todoroki Valley Park

A Serene Nature Retreat and Historical Sanctuary in the Heart of Tokyo

About

Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and stepping into a corner of Setagaya Ward, you find yourself in what feels like an entirely different world. Todoroki Valley Park is a natural oasis quietly nestled in the heart of the city. Just a few minutes’ walk from Todoroki Station on the Tokyu Oimachi Line, a landscape of deep greenery and clear flowing water unfolds before your eyes.

Crossing the bright crimson Golf Bridge at the entrance to the valley, a walking path begins, welcoming visitors. The gentle murmur of the Yazawa River is pleasing to the ear, and the area is lush with trees such as white oak, zelkova, and konara oak. This valley, which displays different expressions with each season, is adorned with cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring and vivid autumn leaves in fall. The cool breeze, which makes you forget the summer heat, soothes the hearts of those who visit.

As you proceed along the path, you come upon horizontal cave tombs believed to have been built from the late Kofun period to the Nara period. The particularly well-preserved No. 3 horizontal cave conveys the burial culture of that era to the present day. Reflecting on the history of those who rest in this place, you cannot help but feel the weight of the passage of time.

Walking further, Fudo Waterfall appears. It is said that the thunderous sound this waterfall once made became the origin of the place name “Todoroki.” Beside the waterfall sits Todoroki Fudoson, where Fudo Myo-o quietly watches over the area. From the observation platform in the temple grounds, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the valley’s beautiful scenery, bringing peace to the hearts of visitors.

On the opposite bank of the valley, a Japanese garden spreads out. Created in 1973 by a renowned landscape architect, this garden is skillfully arranged with a pond, stone paths, and bamboo groves, allowing visitors to enjoy the atmosphere of each season. In the study within the garden, you can spend a quiet moment sitting on the veranda, enjoying complimentary tea.

Todoroki Valley Park is a precious place that lets you forget the noise of the city. This space, woven from nature and history, offers tranquility and healing to those who visit. Free from the busyness of everyday life, this is a place where you can quietly face nature and yourself—a true hidden gem in the city.
