In a tranquil corner of Mama, Ichikawa City, stands the Tejana Reijin-do Shrine. This place is alive with the story of Tejana, a legendary beauty celebrated in the Manyoshu anthology. It is said that Tejana, surrounded by many suitors due to her beauty, was unable to make up her mind and ultimately took her own life. This shrine was built to console her soul.
When you step into the precincts, flowers of every season bloom in profusion, welcoming visitors. In spring, cherry blossoms dance; in summer, the green shade brings coolness; in autumn, colored leaves add vibrancy; and in winter, the tranquility soothes the heart. This place, which keeps the legend of Tejana alive, serves as a spiritual refuge for the local people.
Every July, the Hohozuki Market is held at Tejana Reijin-do Shrine, bustling with many worshippers. During this festival, performances of the Tejana Taiko drum are held, and the powerful sound of Japanese drums echoes throughout the grounds. There is also a hands-on corner where visitors can actually try playing the taiko drums. Through such traditional events, the story of Tejana continues to be passed down to the present day.
Near Tejana Reijin-do Shrine is an old well called Mama-no-I. This well is said to be the place where Tejana drew water, and it still holds pure water today. Visitors purify their hands with the water from this well and reflect on the spirit of Tejana.
