Takagi Shrine

Historic Sanctuary Fusing Tradition and Modern Pop Culture

About

Takagi Shrine, quietly situated in a corner of Oshiage, Sumida Ward, was founded in 1468 (the second year of the Ōnin era). It was originally called “Rokuten Shrine” and enshrined Takejizaiten, the sixth heaven of the Desire Realm. However, due to the policy of separating Shinto and Buddhism during the Meiji period, the main deity was changed to Takamimusubi no Mikoto (Takagi no Kami), and the shrine’s name was also changed to “Takagi Shrine.”

In 1940 (the 15th year of the Shōwa era), it was designated as a village shrine, and in 1967 (the 42nd year of the Shōwa era), the shrine building was reconstructed with reinforced concrete.

In 2018, Souichirou Yamamoto’s manga “Teasing Master Takagi-san” was adapted into an anime, and since the protagonist, Takagi-san, shares her name with the shrine, director Hiroaki Akagi and voice actress Rie Takahashi visited the shrine to pray for the success of the work. Afterwards, through collaboration between the shrine and the production team, a doll of Takagi-san in shrine maiden attire was displayed inside the shrine, and goshuin (shrine stamps) and amulets featuring Takagi-san’s design were sold, turning the shrine into a sacred place visited by fans of the work.

Takagi Shrine is beloved by many people as a place where history and contemporary culture intersect.
