About
Shin-Nishiarai Park quietly stands in a residential area of Nishiarai, Adachi Ward. At the center of this park is a slide called the “Octopus Alien Rocket,” which towers majestically toward the blue sky. Its appearance resembles a spaceship shaped like an octopus about to launch into space, sparking the imagination of children.
This slide is known as Japan’s first “Octopus Slide,” installed in 1965. Initially, it was a slide called “Stone Mountain,” but there is an anecdote that says the current form was created after a staff member remarked, “Put a head on it and make it an octopus.” (city.adachi.tokyo.jp)
In 2019, a public contest was held for the paint design, and the winning entry, “Fly! Octopus Alien Rocket!” was adopted. This design imagines the octopus alien riding a rocket and flying into space, stimulating children’s dreams and sense of adventure. (city.adachi.tokyo.jp)
In addition to the slide, the park also has swings and a sandbox, making it a beloved playground for local children. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom in abundance, and the park is bustling with families and people enjoying walks. Nearby is Nishiarai Daishi, which attracts many visitors for New Year’s visits and temple fairs.
The “Octopus Alien Rocket” of Shin-Nishiarai Park is not just a playground fixture, but a symbol of the area’s history and culture. Its unique design and the story behind it surprise and move visitors, allowing them to rediscover the charm of Adachi Ward.
