Serigaya Park

A Tranquil City Oasis Where Nature and Art Meet

About

Serigaya Park, located not far from the center of Machida City and nestled in tranquility away from the bustle, welcomes visitors like an oasis in the city. This park is a space where nature and art are beautifully harmonized, and the seasonal landscapes soothe the hearts of those who visit.

Passing through the park entrance, the first thing that catches the eye is the promenade surrounded by lush greenery. Deciduous trees such as sawtooth oaks, konara oaks, and zelkovas grow thickly, with fresh green leaves sprouting in spring and autumn foliage coloring the park in fall. These trees have a history of once being used for firewood and charcoal, but now they have grown into large trees, providing shade for visitors.

The stream that flows through the park originates from clear water springing out from under the Odakyu Line at the western end. This water flows through the park and pours into the Onda River. Along the stream, there are ponds and wetlands with rocks and gazebos, creating a paradise for creatures that inhabit the clear waters. From the southwest lobby of the International Print Museum, you can view a waterfall and pond that utilize this spring water, and together with the trees of the strolling garden in the background, you can enjoy a landscape like a painting.

Within the park, there are facilities such as an adventure plaza where children can play freely, a multipurpose plaza, and a lawn plaza, making it a popular relaxation spot for families and friends. In addition, sculptures are scattered throughout the park, allowing visitors to feel the breath of art. In particular, the International Print Museum is Japan’s only museum specializing in prints, and it features an attached printmaking studio. It serves as a place where citizens can familiarize themselves with top-class art while also presenting their own works.

Serigaya Park is also a venue for various events and festivals throughout the year. In spring, the “Machida Sakura Festival” is held, with food stalls, stage performances, and street performers centered around the multipurpose plaza, bustling with many families. In autumn, the “Machida Jidai Festival” takes place, featuring historical parades of Kamakura warriors and peasant soldiers marching from the city center to Serigaya Park, and impressive performances such as matchlock gun demonstrations and horseback archery are held in the multipurpose plaza, attracting many visitors.

In recent years, the “Serigaya Park ‘Forest of Art’ Park Museum” project has been underway, with the theme of turning the entire park into a museum. Citizen-participation events and workshops are being held, further evolving the park into an even more attractive space.

Serigaya Park is a place where nature and art, history and culture are fused, offering a wide variety of attractions to its visitors. It can truly be said to be the perfect place to forget the noise of the city and spend a soothing, healing moment.
