Sanrio Puroland

A Dreamlike World of Hello Kitty and Friends in Tama City

About

In the center of Tama City, as you walk from Tama Center Station, a scene unfolds before you as if a door to a dream world has opened. Proceeding along Parthenon Boulevard and turning to the left, a building resembling a palace appears in the distance. This is Sanrio Puroland.

On December 7, 1990, this theme park opened with the catchphrase “A country made of love and dreams.” It was born as the world’s first indoor theme park. Since its opening, Sanrio’s adorable characters such as Hello Kitty, My Melody, and Pompompurin have welcomed visitors.

Upon stepping inside, the “Tree of Wisdom” towering in the center immediately catches your eye. Around this tree, various attractions and theaters are arranged to entertain visitors. For example, on the “Sanrio Character Boat Ride,” you can ride a boat and tour the world of Sanrio characters. In addition, on the “My Melody & Kuromi Mymeroad Drive,” you can tour the town where My Melody and friends live, and there is also a service where you can decorate photos taken along the way.

The shows and parades are also not to be missed. In “KAWAII KABUKI Momotaro by the Hello Kitty Troupe,” characters including Hello Kitty perform a musical show that fuses kabuki with their own style. Projection mapping and authentic dance performances are woven in, captivating the audience.

Dining is another highlight. At the “Sanrio Rainbow World Restaurant,” there is a wide variety of cute menu items themed after the characters. For example, there are dishes such as Gudetama’s roast beef bowl and My Melody’s strawberry-filled pancakes, offering meals that are as delightful to look at as they are to eat.

Since its opening, Sanrio Puroland has continued to be loved by many people. In 2014, it achieved its first operating profit since opening, and in fiscal year 2015, it recorded 1.58 million visitors, which was 125.4% of the previous year’s figure. This was influenced by increased recognition of Hello Kitty in Asia and a rise in foreign tourists.

This place in Tama City, centered around Sanrio Puroland, continues to be a space filled with dreams and hope, beloved by many. Every visit brings new discoveries and excitement—truly a special place.
