Sakura Furusato Square: Home of the Kabosu Monument

A Charming Park Blending Dutch Scenery, Seasonal Flowers, and the Beloved Shiba Inu Icon

About

When you step into Sakura Furusato Square in Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture, you are greeted by a beautiful landscape where the Dutch-style windmill “Riefde” and seasonal flowers create a picturesque scene. In spring, colorful tulips bloom in profusion; in summer, sunflowers stretch toward the sun; and in autumn, cosmos flowers sway in the wind. This place offers peace and joy to all who visit.

In one corner of the square, there quietly stands a monument to “Kabosu-chan,” the Shiba Inu beloved around the world. Kabosu-chan became an international sensation after a photo of her giving a sidelong glance, posted on her owner Atsuko Sato’s blog, went viral on the internet. Her adorable expression captured the hearts of many, and she became widely known as the model for the cryptocurrency “Dogecoin” and as an icon on social media.

The monument was installed in this square, where Kabosu-chan often took walks, thanks to donations from her fans. Designed in the shape of a sofa, it allows visitors to take photos together with Kabosu-chan. Beside her, the figures of the three cats who lived with Kabosu-chan are also engraved, creating a warm space that conveys their bond.

In addition, in front of the square’s shop “Saraka,” there is a manhole cover featuring a design of Kabosu-chan. This manhole cover combines the image of Kabosu-chan’s sidelong glance with the windmill and tulips, deepening understanding of the sewerage project while providing enjoyment to visitors. Furthermore, from April 26, 2024, manhole cards commemorating this design have been distributed, drawing many fans to the site.

Kabosu-chan passed away at the age of 18 on May 24, 2024, but her presence continues to live on in the hearts of many. When you visit Sakura Furusato Square, you can trace the paths Kabosu-chan once walked and feel her warmth. Watching the sunset by the windmill brings to mind the peaceful times Kabosu-chan and her owner, Ms. Sato, spent together, filling your heart with warmth.

Sakura Furusato Square is a special place where nature, history, and memories of Kabosu-chan intersect. Visitors can experience the changing seasons here, connect with Kabosu-chan’s story, and spend a truly enriching time.
