Puchicalator: The World's Shortest Escalator

Kawasaki's charming underground attraction holds a Guinness World Record and delights visitors with its quirky brief ride.

About

Passing through the bustle of Kawasaki Station’s east exit and walking enveloped in the cool air of the underground mall “Azalea,” you will eventually come across a small escalator that seems to quietly whisper the city’s secrets. Its name is “Puchicalator.”

This escalator, with only five steps, a height difference of 83.4 centimeters, and a travel time of just eight seconds, has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the shortest escalator in the world. (city.kawasaki.jp)

In October 1989, when the underground passage connecting Kawasaki More’s and Kawasaki Azalea opened, an unexpected obstacle was discovered during the design phase. During construction, it was found that a thick beam ran under the floor, making it difficult to install the originally planned downward escalator. However, considering customer convenience, a short escalator was installed up to the point possible. (city.kawasaki.jp)

This unique escalator has become beloved by locals and tourists alike. When names were solicited, about 1,500 entries were received, and the name “Puchicalator” was chosen. (city.kawasaki.jp)

The Puchicalator is located on the second basement floor of Kawasaki More’s, at the Azalea connecting entrance. It is just a five-minute walk from the east exit of JR Kawasaki Station and a two-minute walk from the central exit of Keikyu Kawasaki Station, making it easily accessible. (city.kawasaki.jp)

This small escalator continues to be loved by many as a modest surprise within the city. When you visit Kawasaki, be sure to ride the Puchicalator and experience its short journey.
