About
Amid the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, there is a small bronze statue quietly standing in a corner of the JR Hamamatsucho Station platform. This is the “Peeing Boy,” donated on October 14, 1952, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the opening of the railway. For over 70 years since then, he has continued to watch over the people visiting the station with his unchanging posture.
The charm of this boy lies not only in his adorable appearance. Every month, he dons a new outfit tailored to the season or local events. In spring, he wears a kimono adorned with cherry blossom petals; in summer, a cool-looking yukata; in autumn, a haori with autumn leaf patterns; and in winter, a warm sweater and scarf. These outfits are lovingly handmade by members of the local handicraft group “Ajisai.” They gather on the 26th of each month to change the boy’s clothes. The process is filled with warmth, as if they are caring for a member of their own family.
This tradition has continued since 1986. Initially started by a local housewife, after her passing, “Ajisai” took over and has continued the activity to this day. They have dressed the boy in a variety of creative designs, including firefighter uniforms and anime character costumes. Their ingenuity brings smiles and surprise to station users, adding a small joy to everyday life.
In October 2022, the Peeing Boy celebrated his 70th anniversary since installation, wearing a purple “chanchanko” vest to mark his “koki” (70th birthday). His appearance is proof of his long-standing role as a symbol connecting the station and the local community. The stationmaster expressed gratitude, saying, “He is a symbol of the station that soothes both staff and passengers. It’s thanks to everyone in the community.”
This little statue is not just a decoration. It is the crystallization of the warm hearts, creativity, and ongoing efforts of the local people. The sight of people looking forward to his monthly costume changes offers a moment of respite amid the city’s busyness. The Peeing Boy will surely continue to bring smiles to all who visit the station, with his unchanging presence.
