About
When walking through the streets of Sakoshi, you can feel the quiet breath of time flowing. As you proceed along the stone-paved road, you notice buildings with beautiful black wooden siding and white plastered windows. This is the Okuto Sake Brewery Folk Museum, founded in Keicho 6 (1601). The sake brewery, built more than 300 years ago, still stands today, conveying the weight of history.
Upon stepping inside, you will find exhibits of sake brewing tools from the Edo period, materials related to the shipping industry, and everyday utensils. The Okuto family also served as village headmen and shipping officials, supporting the prosperity of Sakoshi. Each exhibit item evokes the presence of the people of that time.
Okuto Sake Brewery’s signature brand, “Chushingura,” is named after the tale of the Ako Ronin. Its mellow and fragrant flavor has continued to be loved by the local people. At the tasting corner, you can sample this local sake.
On the last Sunday of every odd-numbered month, the “Okuto Market” is held in the courtyard. Local agricultural and marine products, processed foods, and handicrafts are lined up, drawing many visitors. In the historic brewery’s courtyard, you can fully enjoy the charm of the region.
The streets of Sakoshi and the Okuto Sake Brewery Folk Museum are places where history and culture are alive. They tell timeless stories to all who visit.
