When you stand on the platform at Ofuna Station, a white Kannon statue quietly stands in your line of sight. Its figure is like that of a mother gently watching over the city, enveloping the hearts of visitors in calmness.
Construction of this Kannon statue began in 1929 (Showa 4) by local volunteers as a Gokoku Kannon. However, due to the effects of the war, construction was interrupted, and after many years, it was finally completed in 1960 (Showa 35). It stands about 25 meters tall and about 19 meters wide, and its figure clad in white robes is easily recognizable even from a distance. (oofuna-kannon.or.jp)
As you proceed along the approach, lush green trees spread out on both sides, and the chirping of birds is pleasant to the ears. With each step up the stone stairs, the bustle of daily life recedes, and your heart becomes enveloped in tranquility. Eventually, the Kannon statue appears before you, welcoming visitors with its gentle expression.
Within the temple grounds, there are Kosodate Jizo and Yakuyoke Jizo enshrined, and you can see people joining their hands in prayer for the health and safety of their families.
