Constructed in 1997, the dome's design draws inspiration from the surrounding natural beauty, seamlessly integrating with the environment. The soul of the dome lies in its material—Akita cedar, known locally as Akita-sugi. Over 25,000 trees, each aged over sixty years, were meticulously selected from the nearby forests to create the massive laminated timber arches that support the structure. Above, the roof is sheathed in a double-layered membrane of Teflon-coated fiberglass.
