Miharashi Hill: Sea of Seasonal Blossoms

Sweeping Flower Views, Historic Roots, and Family Fun in Hitachinaka

About

"Miharashi no Oka" in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is known for its poetically rich scenery woven by the natural beauty of each season. With the arrival of spring, the entire hill is dyed blue with nemophila, creating a fantastic scene as if the sky and sea have descended to earth. The best time to view the nemophila is from mid-April to early May, when about 5.3 million flowers bloom across the vast 4.2-hectare hill. (ibarakiguide.jp)

When summer arrives, the hill is covered with lime-green kochia, spreading a refreshing green carpet. The kochia begin to grow in early July and reach their best viewing period from mid-August to late September. (companydata.tsujigawa.com) As the autumn wind begins to blow, the kochia gradually turn red, and from mid-October to late October, the entire hill is dyed a fiery red. At the peak of this autumn foliage, the hill presents a spectacular view like a sea of red. (mirai-report.com)

Looking back at the history of "Miharashi no Oka," this area once housed the Mito East Airfield of the Japanese military, and after the war, it was used as a U.S. military bombing range. Due to a return movement by local residents who had suffered from noise for many years, the land was returned to Japan in 1973. Out of the residents' strong desire to "develop the park as a symbol of peace," the current beautiful park was born. (goo.ne.jp)

At the foot of the hill, a thatched-roof old folk house from the Edo period has been relocated, offering visitors a nostalgic view of old Japan. Here, visitors can experience traditional games such as bamboo-copter, hanetsuki, and spinning tops, making it a popular spot for families. (tabirai.net)

In addition, within the park is the amusement park "Pleasure Garden," which features attractions such as a giant Ferris wheel and roller coasters, allowing both children and adults to enjoy themselves all day long. Especially from the giant Ferris wheel, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the park's flowers and the Pacific Ocean, leaving a deep impression on those who visit. (tabirai.net)
