About
On the banks of the Sumida River, nestled in tranquility a little removed from the bustle of Asakusa, stands Matsuchiyama Shoten. This small hill, with an elevation of only 10 meters, is said to have sprung up overnight from the earth in the third year of Empress Suiko’s reign (595 AD). At that time, a golden dragon is believed to have descended from the heavens to protect the mountain. This mysterious origin resonates with the mountain name of Senso-ji, “Kinryuzan” (Golden Dragon Mountain), and has attracted the faith of people since ancient times.
Upon entering the temple grounds, you will notice designs of daikon radishes and drawstring pouches everywhere. The daikon symbolizes physical health and marital harmony, while the pouch represents the virtue of prosperity, and both are considered indispensable offerings to Shoten-sama. Especially during the “Daikon Festival” held on January 7, daikon that had been offered to the principal deity during the New Year is prepared as simmered daikon and served to worshippers along with sacred sake. This festival is a traditional event bustling with many people, who receive the virtue of Shoten-sama and pray for health of mind and body.
Behind the main hall, a tsuijibei (mud wall) quietly stands, retaining the atmosphere of the Edo period. This wall is a historic structure depicted in the woodblock prints of Utagawa Hiroshige and is a precious remnant that escaped the ravages of war. Within the temple grounds, there are also enshrined the Shusse Kannon and Kanki Jizo, which bring peace to the hearts of visitors.
Matsuchiyama Shoten also enshrines Bishamonten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Asakusa, who is worshipped as a deity bestowing wealth and courage. In addition, the unique secret ritual of Shoten-sama, the “Yokuyu Kito” (oil bathing prayer), is performed every morning for seven days, serving as a spiritual support for those wishing for the fulfillment of their prayers.
This place has been a scenic spot beloved by literary figures and artists since the Edo period, and its picturesque view overlooking the Sumida River continues to captivate the hearts of visitors even today. Matsuchiyama Shoten is cherished by many as a place that makes one forget the noise of the city and feel the weight of history in its tranquility.
