About
Mara Kannon
Mara Kannon (麻羅観音) is a unique temple located in Tawarayama, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It is renowned for its association with prayers for fertility, health, and marital harmony.
Historical Background: The temple's origin dates back to 1551 during the "Ōuchi Rebellion" (Ōuchi no Hen). Ōuchi Yoshitaka, the lord of the region, was betrayed by his retainer, Sue Harukata, and met his end at Tainei-ji Temple in Yumoto. His youngest son, Kanjumaru, disguised himself as a woman and hid in the Tawarayama area. Unfortunately, he was captured and killed, with his male organ severed as proof of his gender. Moved by this tragic event, the local villagers established Mara Kannon to console his spirit. (nanavi.jp)
