About
Nestled in the residential area of Chitose, Sumida Ward, Tokyo’s downtown, is “Kissa Laundry.” Located on the first floor of a 55-year-old building, this shop opened in January 2018 after renovating a space that was once a glove packing workshop. Boasting about 100 square meters of floor space, the interior is a unique blend of a café area and a “community household room.”
Upon entering, the first thing that catches your eye is the café space, where you can enjoy coffee, tea, craft beer, curry, light meals, and cakes. Wooden tables and chairs exude warmth, and the soft lighting creates a comfortable atmosphere. Over the counter, you can see staff carefully preparing drinks and food, giving visitors a sense of warmth.
Further inside, you’ll find the “community household room,” equipped with laundry machines, irons, and sewing machines. Here, three each of the latest “mypro” series washers and dryers from Swedish brand Electrolux are installed. One of the unique charms of this shop is that you can relax in the café space while waiting for your laundry.
Additionally, the household room has two Brother sewing machines and two irons, allowing for sewing and ironing tasks. You can also use thread donated by local mothers, making it a place for people who enjoy handcrafts to interact.
“Kissa Laundry” is not just a café or a laundromat; it also functions as a community space for the neighborhood. Inside, there are a variety of spaces, including the semi-basement “Mole Seats” with only seven seats, the “Floor Seats” furnished with diverse furniture, and the “Household Room” lined with laundry equipment. These spaces can be rented for various purposes such as workshops, events, meetings, and photo shoots.
For example, the “community household room” can be used by groups of about 6 to 10 people for activities such as cooking classes, interview recordings, picture book study groups, hat making, birthday parties, and paper-cutting workshops. The semi-basement “Mole Seats” offer a cozy, secluded atmosphere and are used for ladies’ lunch gatherings, knitting clubs, and family year-end parties.
In this way, “Kissa Laundry” is loved by many as a place where visitors can freely enjoy their own time. Strollers, wheelchairs, and pets are welcome, and bringing your own food is allowed. You can spend time quietly alone, enjoy yourself with friends, focus on PC work or crafting—this place offers free relaxation to everyone. It truly is a modern version of a café.
