A heartfelt tribute to the beloved comedian in his hometown, featuring a bronze statue, commemorative trees, and the iconic station melody.

About

When you exit the east exit of Higashimurayama Station, you will see three zelkova trees towering in a corner of the rotary that spreads out before you. These trees are affectionately known as the "Ken Shimura Trees," and were planted by the city in 1976, along with a letter of appreciation, to honor Ken Shimura’s achievement in spreading the name of his hometown nationwide through the "Higashimurayama Ondo." Now, more than forty years later, these zelkovas are lush with green leaves, providing cool shade in front of the station.

Beside them stands a life-sized bronze statue of Ken Shimura. Erected in 2021 with support from all over the country, this statue strikes Shimura’s signature “Aiin” pose, bringing smiles to visitors. Behind the statue, there is a mosaic art piece made from photos contributed by supporters of the crowdfunding campaign, depicting Shimura’s warm smile.

At the station front, there is also a commemorative signboard honoring Ken Shimura’s achievements, conveying his greatness to all who visit. In addition, the departure melody at Higashimurayama Station features the "Higashimurayama Ondo," allowing people to feel Shimura’s presence every time they use the station.

This place continues to be loved by many as a symbol of Ken Shimura’s hometown, Higashimurayama. Visitors express their respect and gratitude to Shimura by striking the “Aiin” pose and taking photos in front of the statue. It is a heartwarming spot that makes you feel that his laughter and warmth are still alive in this place.
