About

Immediately outside the Marunouchi South Exit of Tokyo Station, the former Tokyo Central Post Office building, which retains its historical appearance, has been given new life as the modern commercial facility "KITTE." Located on the second and third floors, "Intermediatheque" is a comprehensive academic and cultural museum jointly operated by the University of Tokyo and Japan Post.

Upon entering the museum, the first thing that catches your eye is the foyer, which features a white color scheme. Taking a step further, you are greeted by exhibition rooms with a stately atmosphere. Here, a diverse array of academic specimens accumulated by the University of Tokyo since its founding in 1877 are on display.

The display cases and cabinets reuse furnishings that were once used at the University of Tokyo, creating a dignified atmosphere that evokes the history from the Imperial University era.

In the permanent exhibition booth on the second floor, you will find an impressive display of skeletal specimens from a wide variety of animals, including red deer, Masai giraffes, ostriches, and minke whales.

Additionally, the "Guimet Room," which uses antique display cases donated by Émile Guimet, a collector of Asian art, houses a carefully selected collection of academic specimens ranging from natural history to cultural history.

Admission to Intermediatheque is free, allowing visitors to enjoy a wide variety of exhibitions that stimulate intellectual curiosity.
