Hiko Jinja Shrine
Hiko Jinja Shrine, located in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, is a relatively modern Shinto shrine founded in 1915 by Ninomiya Chuhachi (1866–1936), a pioneer of Japanese aviation. The shrine is dedicated to praying for safe air travel and honors the souls of all individuals who have perished in aviation accidents, regardless of nationality. (mlit.go.jp)
Ninomiya Chuhachi's fascination with flight began early in his life. In 1891, he successfully flew a rubber-powered model aircraft called the "crow-type flying machine." By 1893, he developed the "jewel beetle-type flying machine," a tailless biplane model intended for manned flight. However, due to financial constraints, he paused his aviation pursuits. After working in the pharmaceutical industry for several years, he resumed his efforts by constructing a full-scale aircraft prototype in Yawata. Unfortunately, before its completion, the Wright brothers achieved the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered heavier-than-air aircraft in 1903. (mlit.go.jp)
Deeply affected by the increasing number of aviation-related fatalities, Chuhachi turned to Shinto priesthood and established Hiko Jinja Shrine. The main sanctuary comprises three altars: the central altar enshrines Nigihayahi no Mikoto, a deity of the sky; the right altar is dedicated to the souls lost in aviation accidents and aviation pioneers; and the left altar honors prominent figures in the Japanese pharmaceutical industry. In 1989, the shrine was rebuilt, featuring a prayer hall in a classical Western style with columns and stained-glass decorations depicting animals that inspired Chuhachi's aircraft designs. A small museum on the premises exhibits items related to Chuhachi's life and inventions, including sketches, photographs, kites, and airplane models he developed. Additionally, hundreds of collectible airplane models donated by aviation enthusiasts are displayed. (mlit.go.jp)
