About
As you step into the entrance of Enoshima, the sea breeze brushes your cheeks and the sound of waves reaches your ears from afar. In a corner of the Shonan Port North Green Square stands a fountain pond, established to commemorate the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. At the center of this fountain pond, Benzaiten sits quietly holding a biwa, surrounded by statues of women from the East and West. These bronze statues were created by Mr. Akikiyo Kato, a member of the Japan Art Academy and a resident of Fujisawa City. (fujisawa-kanko.jp)
Benzaiten is known as one of the three great Benzaiten shrines in Japan, alongside Chikubushima in Omi and Itsukushima in Aki, and is a symbolic presence of Enoshima. The female statues arranged around her symbolize the Olympic rings and express world peace and friendship. (plaza.rakuten.co.jp)
The surface of the fountain pond sparkles in the sunlight, occasionally creating a rainbow. At night, underwater lights illuminate the pond, creating a magical atmosphere. This place is beloved as a place of relaxation for both tourists and locals, offering tranquility and beauty to all who visit. (plaza.rakuten.co.jp)
Enoshima has long flourished as a crossroads of faith and art. This fountain pond, too, stands as a symbol of that history and culture, leaving a deep impression on those who visit.
