Ennoji Temple

A Tranquil Sanctuary of Reflection in Kamakura

I visited to find peace of mind, enjoyed delicious coffee at the teahouse in the temple grounds, and found the Ten Kings both imposing and gentle.   tsu ei

About

Ennoji, standing quietly in a tranquil valley of Kamakura, welcomes visitors beyond the flow of time. Stepping into the temple grounds, the surrounding clamor fades away, and the heart becomes calm. As the leaves of the trees sway in the wind and birdsong echoes, a stone-paved path leads to the main hall.

Upon entering the main hall, the statue of King Enma, enshrined at the center, immediately catches the eye. Its dignified appearance inspires awe in those who visit. King Enma is said to judge the deeds of the dead during their lifetimes, and this faith is deeply rooted here at Ennoji. Local people visit this place to pray for the repose of deceased family and friends and to seek peace of mind.

Walking through the temple grounds, the seasonal changes of nature delight the eyes. In spring, cherry blossoms are in full bloom; in summer, lush green trees cast cool shadows. In autumn, colored leaves decorate the grounds, and in winter, a crisp air drifts through the silence. These transitions in nature soothe the hearts of visitors and help them forget the bustle of daily life.

Ennoji is a place where one can feel the history and culture of Kamakura and leaves a deep impression on those who visit. The moments spent here bring purification of the heart and new realizations, providing fresh vitality for daily life.
