E18 Steam Locomotive Memorial

A Historic Military Engine Preserved in Nerima, Tokyo

About

In a quiet residential area of Nerima Ward, Tokyo, along the street in Toyotamakita 1-chome, there stands a steam locomotive that has transcended time. Its name is the E18-type steam locomotive. Once belonging to the Japanese Army Railway Regiment, this locomotive played an active role in transporting supplies and troops to battlefields. Now, having quietly completed its mission, it remains here as a witness to history.

The E18-type was manufactured in 1921 by Orenstein & Koppel in Germany. Designed for a narrow gauge of 600mm and featuring five driving wheels, its unique appearance was intended for operation in war zones with many sharp curves and steep gradients. However, due to its high center of gravity, it was prone to derailment within Japan. For this reason, modifications were later made to parts such as the firebox of the boiler to lower its center of gravity. (tabitayo.com)

After the war, this locomotive was transferred to Seibu Railway and used on a gravel extraction line near Apina Station in Saitama Prefecture. It was left abandoned for a long time, but after being restored, it was preserved statically at UNESCO Village. After the closure of UNESCO Village, it was relocated to the front of the headquarters of Eriei Co., Ltd. in Nerima Ward, Tokyo, where it remains today. (tabitayo.com)

The locomotive’s preservation site is about a five-minute walk from Shin-Egota Station on the Toei Oedo Subway Line. The surrounding area is a quiet residential neighborhood, and the locomotive stands out to passersby on the street. A fence has been installed around the locomotive, and a roof provides protection from the elements. Visitors quietly gaze at this locomotive, sensing its historical value. (steamlocomotivejapan.com)
