Byōdō-in Temple, located in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, is a historic Buddhist temple renowned for its architectural beauty and cultural significance. Established in 1052 by Fujiwara no Yorimichi, it was originally a villa belonging to his father, Fujiwara no Michinaga, before being converted into a temple. (en.wikipedia.org)

The temple's most iconic structure is the Phoenix Hall (Hōō-dō), constructed in 1053. This hall is celebrated for its elegant design, featuring a central hall flanked by two wing corridors and a tail corridor, creating the image of a phoenix with outstretched wings. The Phoenix Hall houses a revered statue of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha), crafted by the renowned sculptor Jōchō. (en.wikipedia.org)

Byōdō-in Temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto," recognized for its outstanding cultural value. The Phoenix Hall's image is also featured on the Japanese 10-yen coin, symbolizing its national importance. (en.wikipedia.org)

Visitors to Byōdō-in can explore the temple grounds, including the Phoenix Hall and the surrounding Pure Land Garden, which reflects the Buddhist concept of paradise.
