About
In a corner of Arakicho, Shinjuku Ward, not far from Yotsuya Sanchome Station, there is a quietly nestled place called “Bozu Bar.” This bar is a unique space unlike any other, operated by active Buddhist monks.
When you step inside, monks dressed in robes greet you with smiles from behind the counter. In this place where you can feel the teachings of Buddhism up close, the monks themselves make and serve the drinks. The menu features cocktails with unique names inspired by Buddhism, such as “Great Scorching Hell,” piquing the curiosity of visitors.
A distinctive feature of this bar is that, in addition to enjoying drinks, you can also receive life advice from the monks. Monks from various sects, including Jodo Shinshu and Soto Zen, are present, and you can casually talk with staff who have ties to Buddhism, regardless of sect. In addition, short Buddhist services and sermons are held daily, allowing you to experience the teachings of Buddha.
The interior has a calm atmosphere, with about 40 seats centered around the counter. Business hours are from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, and the bar is closed on Sundays and public holidays. There is a cover charge of 500 yen, and you can enjoy drinks and light snacks.
“Bozu Bar” is a one-of-a-kind place where you can enjoy drinks and conversations with monks while feeling close to the teachings of Buddhism. If you want to step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and calm your mind, why not pay a visit?
