Asahi Group Headquarters Building

Tokyo’s Iconic Golden Landmark on the Sumida River

About

On the banks of the Sumida River, with the bustle of Asakusa behind it, a striking golden building towers above the scene. This is the Asahi Group Headquarters Building. Its amber-colored glass gleams in the sunlight, and the white section at the top looks just like foam overflowing from a beer mug. Since its completion in 1989, this design has been beloved as a new landmark of Tokyo.

On the rooftop of the adjacent black building, the Super Dry Hall, sits the golden flame-shaped object “Flamme d’Or,” created by renowned French designer Philippe Starck. This symbolizes Asahi Beer’s burning passion and progress, and at night it is illuminated, its brilliance reflected on the surface of the Sumida River.

On the 22nd floor of the building is the observation lounge “Asahi Sky Room,” where visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Asakusa cityscape and Tokyo Skytree. Spending time here with a cold beer in hand, taking in the scenery below, lets you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

On the same floor is the Italian restaurant “La Ranarita,” where you can savor authentic dishes made with seasonal ingredients along with the night view of Tokyo. The open space, based on blue and yellow, feels just like a restaurant in the sky.

Furthermore, behind the building is the craft beer brewery “TOKYO Sumidagawa Brewing,” where you can taste limited-edition beers. Brewing tanks are installed inside the shop, and brewers are always present, making it an irresistible spot for beer lovers.

This location was once the site of Asahi Beer’s Azumabashi Brewery, and the current headquarters building was constructed in 1989 to commemorate the company’s 100th anniversary. This place, where history and innovation intersect, continues to captivate many people even now.

Along with the flow of the Sumida River, the Asahi Group Headquarters Building blends into the Tokyo landscape, yet stands out with its unique design. Shining in the sunlight by day and creating a magical atmosphere with its nighttime illumination, this building offers visitors new discoveries and inspiration.
